Top 5 similarities for US business success

We all want to belong and create meaningful connections. Build on the similarities in Dutch and American culture for faster US business success

I often write about the cultural differences between the U.S. and the Netherlands, and how to bridge these for success. However, building strong business relationships isn’t just about bridging differences, it’s also about building on similarities. After all, whether in the Netherlands or the U.S., we all want to belong and create meaningful connections.

So let’s explore the top 5 Dutch/American similarities and what these mean for you!

1. Directness and Clarity

Both Dutch and Americans appreciate open and clear communication. While Americans tend to be more diplomatic in their approach, especially when it comes to negative news, honesty is valued in both cultures. Use this to your advantage by being very clear about your expectations and goals—just be mindful of your tone and leave out your opinions!

2. Entrepreneurial Mindset

Both countries have a strong entrepreneurial spirit. Innovation, taking risks, and seizing opportunities are part of the Dutch and American culture (note: less in American corporate culture). For entrepreneurs, this means that by demonstrating a proactive attitude you can quickly build rapport with American business partners.

3. Focus on Efficiency and Results

Americans and Dutch both value efficiency—time is money, and results matter. This shared mindset can be a great foundation for collaboration: be clear on how your product adds value and provide concrete solutions.

4. Networking is Key

Success in both the Netherlands and the U.S. depends among others on relationships. While networking in the U.S. may be more pronounced, the underlying principle remains the same: trust and mutual support create long-term value. Don’t be afraid to be proactive in networking groups and demonstrate the value you can add.

5. Pragmatism

Both cultures embrace a no-nonsense attitude—if there’s a problem, we find a solution. In fact, some Americans may say, “There are no problems, only challenges to be solved.” This shared mindset simplifies collaboration, as there’s less need to navigate differing work preferences
